2012 FGI Rising Star Awards!!!!

The Fashion Group International 2012 Rising Star awards were held last week at Cipriani 42nd Street and I had the most amazing time! We arrived at the venue (beautiful!!) and the first order of business for finalists was to check in and choose a corsage, which distinguished us as finalists. I chose a vibrant pink orchid to go with my raspberry tights. Next we waited to have our photo taken by the press on the red carpet and interview by ChicTv .

We were able to enjoy a drink and mingle before the luncheon and awards and met everyone from a lawyer who's focus is fashion, the owner of an online retail shop and the creators of the skincare line , Worker B.

We sat for lunch (incredible! I ate every bite) and listened to speakers Ruben and Isabel Toledo. On one side of us sat a teacher at FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology) and on the other, the owner of a NY Fashion PR company.

Our category (accessories) was presented by Project Runway participant and designer, Rami Kashou. He read a brief description of each designer as pictures of our line were projected on the large screen above the stage. The winner of our category was Blythe Harris of Stella and Dot, a direct sales jewelry company founded in 2004.

Attendees included Ralph Rucci, Thom Browne, Catherine Malandrino and Tommy Hillfiger who's daughter, Ally Hilfiger, was nominated (along with her design partner, Nary Manivong) in the Womenswear category for their line, NAHM. (that's her next to me in the group pic)

A highlight was as we were leaving the event and I met Rami Kashou (the presenter of my category). We was so kind and encouraging and came across as an overall warm and genuine person. It was nice that someone who has met such success still took the time to connect with a fan and up and coming designer such as myself. Thanks, Rami!

Not winning my category was by no means a disappointment. We often make fun of the phrase "it's an honor just to be nominated" but in this case, it truly was. As a pretty small fish in a sea of fashion experts and entrepreneurs, I was able to relax, sit back and take in the experience. Most winners had a prepared speech but with no expectations I had no speech (or even a thought of one!) prepared. However, while I could go on and on about those who have been such an instrumental part of this journey so far, I would like to take a moment to extend just 4 "thank yous" here:

-Fashion Group International for the recognition and choosing me as a finalist in the 2012 Rising Star awards. It's been an honor and amazing experience

- Tauni Green for being such an enthusiastic fan of Mimi & Lu and for nominating me in the first place.

- My parents who encouraged their kids to do what they love.

-My husband- the most patient man on earth- who, when I told him I was quitting my job to twist wires in a spare bedroom, didn't bat an eye.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY LUCCA!

It's truly amazing we have made it this far, but today is Lucca's 3rd birthday!! This past weekend Mike and I were talking about how we are probably those people who others say - "Here they all come again--what's with them and that dog?!?!" - And we admit it- we are shamefully in love with our big baby. He has been an integral part of Mimi & Lu as well as our personal lives. Who knew this big, slobbery, dumb creature could capture so much attention. A look back:

Almost immediately, Lucca used one of his nine lives. Here we are a week into owning Lucca at the Animal Hospital where he was treated for Parvo.

Well, 6 months later Lucca would fracture his front leg, leaving us trying to lift a 75lb dog up and down stairs for potty breaks. This was one of the most trying times with Lucca. Can't you see the sadness in his eyes!

My visit to Michael Jackson's Neverland

With the Michael Jackson/Conrad Murray trial wrapping up (YES, Ive been watching- I love courtroom drama) it's brought to mind a day I spent at Neverland ages ago. Yes, THAT Neverland. The Michael Jackson Neverland. Before the hoopla and scandals, when it was still a place of magical wonder that you couldn't pay to go to- you had to be invited.

Michael invited mostly under privileged or disabled children to the ranch. (Now, however you feel about him (and children) try to set that aside. Michael was not at the ranch when we visited.) In college, I worked at a summer camp for underprivileged girls and a coworker happened to be married to one of the Neverland ranch hands. This is how we were ultimately invited.

I couldn't sleep the night before. Of course this was for the girls but how could I not also be excited?! We took vans through the mountains outside Santa Barbara and finally arrive at a gate. We were let into the gate and it was a long way until we actually reached Neverland. We were there, we were AT Michael Jackson's house. I remember the person who met us said there was no need to lock the vans. It was this totally surreal, secure, bubble.

We started in the arcade which, if I remember correctly, was attached to his house. The girls played all sorts of arcade games. There was a photo booth and rows of those candy machines that you put a quarter in and turn the knob for candy, only in this arcade- no quarters were necessary. (We quickly put an end to the endless candy eating, envisioning a group of sick girls in an hour)

Im going to forget the order of events, but at some point we took at train (think Disneyland) to the Zoo area. I fed a giraffe. We saw all sorts of animals, reptiles and met a chimp. Honestly, I can't remember if it was Bubbles- I just know we werent allowed to touch him.

We saw a movie in his theater. We walked into the lobby and there was a candy and food counter- just like a regular theater- and 2 people behind it who smiled and said, what would you like? They handed out candy, ice cream, popcorn- whatever you wished. We watched the animated film, The Iron Giant. I believe it was before it was actually available to the public.

Aside from a few kids with their parents that I'd see in passing, we seemed to be the only group at the ranch. They served us a picnic lunch under some trees. We ate and enjoyed the sunshine.

The last part of the day was what the girls had been waiting for- the amusement park. Rides with NO lines and really no end-- The ride operator would slow down the ride and shout- "Does anyone want to get off?!?-" No? - he just sped it back up again. You could serve yourself cotton candy and snow cones. We had one girl throw up on the bumper cars, but that was our only casualty.

I have a distinct memory of being on those swinging chairs- the ones that are attached to long cables and you rise in the air and it spins you so your chair floats around the center- and I was thinking- This is AMAZING. The wind was in my face and Michael Jackson music playing across the park. These girls had the most giant smiles on their face that lasted the entire day. Most who would go back to homes where there was violence or where a parent was in jail. All of which could never afford this in the 'real' world. For that time, those moments- it truly was a Neverland. Endlessly magical.

Have you ever heard anyone say they HATE Fall? Me neither. Winter-yes (too cold), Summer- yes (too hot), Spring- maybe (allergies), but Fall? Like most everyone, I LOVE Fall. Granted, in San Diego, Fall is a little less dramatic....the chill in the air isnt nearly as distinct as the East Coast and the leaves- well that just doesn't compare but it's STILL Fall. Halloween approaches, we break out our boots and pumpkin lattes/muffins/scones/etc are abound (my absolute favorite!).

By now, hopefully you have viewed the Mimi & Lu Reviv(f)al(l) collection and maybe even purchased a piece or two to go with all the amazing fall fashions this year. As someone not usually enticed by trends- this falls flashback to the 70's trends are admittedly hard to resist. Basically, I love 'em. I've always loved them, but now they are just easier to find.

Fall brings on the cozy sweaters and colorful scarves, which brings me to the point of this blog entry; the inevitable missing earring. You may not have realized this, but a scarf and hoop earring are a disastrous combination. Every year, I get home an notice at some point during the evening, I started to look like a pirate. One hoop earring has jumped ship and it's the scarf's fault. With larger earrings that don't have a lot of give (ie a large hoop such as the Jumbo Misu seen the bottom left pic) that use a hook earwire (instead of a post) to attach to your ear, just a tilt of the head can pop the earring out as it pushes against the scarf.

Sometimes naming pieces is a challenge. The right name doesn't pop in my head or I just draw a blank. Weekend Wandering II

Another weekend of wandering! Despite the heat, we managed to pack a lot in this weekend. Most importantly, I (finally) made it up to the new Nicole Miller store (they moved from La Jolla to the Forum!) and it is AMAZING!! The store is beautiful, roomy and inviting. I am honored to have Mimi & Lu in the store- there is an entire case of it! Lucca loved his visit too:

No, not in that 'darn' kind of way but as in PHOTO shoot! Yesterday, we had a Mimi & Lu photo shoot in Little Italy. It was a long day, but a fun one. I have many people to thank for making it happen. Both my models- Joanna and Carissa, the photographer- Chris Wood, Jessica Delee from RoseRags for helping style the shoot, Vocabulary and Cecilia Boutique for the clothing (and a place to change!), and my husband for opening up the Firehouse Museum and for being the 'go get us a sandwich' guy. Oh and of course Lucca even though he was a not so patient participant.

It's one of the hottest days of the summer and my brain is on the holidays. This means it's design time! In fact, most designers were thinking about the holidays months ago, but because most of my customers by immediates (meaning, for immediate delivery) I present new collections closer to the actual season.
This time, I've decided to give myself a bit more time to design (instead of my usual cram sessions). This was in part intentional but also because a design came to me and I had to drop everything to hash it out. Does this happen to anyone else? That design led to the next idea and another idea and low and behold Im into designing the next collection. Here is a sneak preview of what Im working on for Fall/Holiday '11..

With the launch of LuccaLove- Mimi & Lu's jewelry line that gives back to Southern California Dog Rescues- I want to not only help raise money to save dogs, but provide education about rescues and get a better understanding about the problem and solutions.

I asked I.C.A.R.E, a Southern California dog rescue based in Orange County, some questions about rescues and the problem of abandoned dogs.

Can you clarify the differences (or if there are differences) between a “pound”, “shelter”, “rescue”, the humane society, etc... Where does I.C.A.R.E pull their dogs from and how do you choose which places/dogs to assist?
"There are differences between all of these, but the terms are usually used synonymously. Rescues are typically the ones who save animals from being euthanized in the pounds and are typically non profit or privately funded organizations. Where, the pounds are usually run by the city (Animal Control). When it comes down to the differences between the pound /shelter/humane society, the difference is usually found in their funding. To this date, there aren’t any no-kill shelters/pounds/humane societies in Southern California. As far as I.C.A.R.E., we don't limit where we pull dogs from. We feel it is important to save those dogs that need us the most. All dogs are in danger of being euthanized as soon as they step foot in the shelter or pound. However, we choose to save those who are labeled as "urgent", (usually meaning they have been given 24hrs). [Also,] many of our rescue dogs are also surrendered to us by owners who can no longer keep them due to various reasons"

Call me naive, but before I owned a dog I was clueless to just how many dogs are euthanized each year due simply to overcrowding- even well behaved, adoptable dogs. What have you found are the most common reasons dogs are left at shelters or end up homeless?

"In Orange County alone last year, over 15,000 animals were euthanized in the shelter. [Even] the cute, well behaved dogs are at risk!

When one chooses to own an animal, it should be a life time commitment. Many animals are given up due to a family relocating, cost, or issues that the animal may have that the owner doesn't want to take time to work on. Some owners don't realize that their dog has a 30% (at best) survival rate once they enter that shelter. They assume someone will adopt their once beloved pet. Aside from euthanization, the chances of animals becoming ill while in the shelter are extremely high! This also decreases their chances of being adopted and increases their chances of euthanization."

Which are the most difficult to adopt out? Why? What are the common misconceptions about shelter dogs?
"Pit Bull mixes are by far the most difficult to adopt out due to the misconceptions surrounding their breed. Even those potential adopters who embrace the breed often aren't allowed to have Pit Bulls where they live, or they aren't covered by their homeowners insurance. Many renters have weight and breed limitations, restricting the size and type of dog they can adopt. That all aside, anyone that owns a pit bull will tell you, they are the most magnificent breed! They will fill your life with huge pit bull smiles and slobbery kisses; they are extremely loyal and loving!"

Your description explains that I.C.A.R.E rescue and rehabilitate dogs. Can you explain a bit about the rehabilitation aspect and what that entails?
"We at I.C.A.R.E. understand no one is perfect. Many dogs come from the shelter, the street, or from a home environment with various issues. These issues can be physical or emotional and range anywhere from fear, injuries, illness, lack of trust, aggression, potty training, to just flat out needing some love. Whatever issue a pup might have, we at I.C.A.R.E. greet them with open arms, willing to love them no matter what. If they need us, we are there, willing to do whatever it takes to help them find their forever home. In this world, we all have needed 2nd, or even 5th chances; we at I.C.A.R.E. take the term "rescue" pretty seriously! "

What do you look for in a potential adopter? What do you suggest people consider before owning a dog?
"We want nothing but the best for each of our dogs! Each interested adopter must fill out an extensive adoption application, agree to a home check, sign an adoption contract, and agree to follow up visits from our staff. We look for someone who is responsible and who is willing to love their dog unconditionally. We require that it is a family decision! We do not allow gift adoptions."

Lucca misbehaving

Lucca was a difficult dog to train. His puppy school instructors would describe him as a ‘challenge’ (and he was). There were times we were tired and mentally exhausted but managed to stick with it and as a result we enjoy him today as a pet with minimal behavioral problems. I’ve known many dog owners who have been ready to give their dog up because the dog has an issue or is misbehaving and they are at a loss on how to deal with it. Are there resources that owners can turn to that can help them learn how to tackle the problem and avoid surrendering their dog?

"This is a very common reason people give up their dogs. We try our best to help them, offering them the service of our trainer, as well as suggestions. Unfortunately, they usually contact us after they've already made their mind up to give up their dog. At this point, they are already at the end of their rope emotionally and any help that we try to give them isn't successful since results usually aren't instantaneous. My advice to someone in this situation is to seek help right away. Don't wait until its so out of control that you are so exhausted that you are demanding instant results. That whole saying, " you can't teach a dog new tricks" well, you can... just not over night or even in a week! You need a whole lot of patience and a whole lot of love and determination. I truly applaud you that you didn't give up on Lucca! What a beautiful success story!!!!"

Aside from adopting a dog, how else can people contribute to saving dogs and reducing the number of dogs euthanized in shelters each year?
"SPAY AND NEUTER YOUR PETS!!!! Until our society realizes the importance of spay and neutering and not continuing to breed and support breeders as well as pet stores, innocent animals are going to continue to die in shelters because of the over population. Anyone can help spread awareness of this issue!"

Here are some additional ways I.C.A.R.E explains we can help save dogs aside from adopting:
-Foster! ICARE (and many other rescues) supply all needs so it is no coast to the foster parent.
-Volunteer at adoption events
- Transport dogs to adoption events
- Monetary donations which go towards expenses such as vet bills which really plauge a rescue. Each dog must be spayed/neutered, receive up to date shots and treated for any sickness caught in a shelter.
-Donation of supplies such as food, crates, leashes

Dog Days

Last week, there was a news report covering a horrible attack on a woman in San Diego by two pit bulls. They got loose from their home and attacked their 75 year old neighbor, critically injuring her. She's lost one leg and faces amputation of another leg and arm. This is horrific and tragic. Unthinkable, really. In the week following this incident I saw 2 more news reports on pit bull attacks- incidents where a pit bull had bit someone.

Now it seems, the idea of banning pit bulls from San Diego is being tossed around. This would not be the first city to enforce such a ban- Denver and Miami have already done so. There are many who believe pit bulls are inherently aggressive and dangerous. I am a dog lover, but not a dog expert so it's not my place to offer an opinion on that. Here is what I can say:

In the summer of 2010, my husband was bit by a dog which sent him with a severely injured hand to the ER, followed by months of visits to the doctor, hand surgeon and physical therapist. The dog that attacked him was a 40lb shepherd mix with razor sharp teeth. Did anyone report on this on the evening news? No. Earlier this year, a fellow dog owner in the neighborhood showed me cell phone pics of the giant gash in his thigh from a dog attack at the park. Was this a pit bull? No. Was it on the news? Nope.

Dog attacks and bites are traumatizing. I still have a hard time dealing with my husband's dog bite incident. But these attacks are not exclusive to a breed. Whether one breed is more prone to aggression than another may or may not be true but what is clear is that attacks by certain breeds are more publicized. I can't tell you how many times people cross the street when I'm walking towards them with my great dane, Lucca. I can guarantee you if you get close enough, all he's going to do is lick your face. I'm hoping we can remember that there are completely loveable dogs in every breed. Ive met plenty of pit bulls that roll over and want their belly scratched.

Instead of a ban on pit bulls, what I would love to see is as push to educate dog owners on proper dog training and care. In the same breathe, I admire those who have taken in abandoned dogs who may have issues and given them a home. Let's provide outlets for them to learn how to rehabilitate their dog or if these outlets do exist, let's make sure dog owners know where to turn for help. Let's find out the root of the problem and start there.

There has to be a better solution than simply tossing a breed of dog out of your city. I hope you will consider calling the following number and letting them know you do not want pit bulls banned from San Diego County. It's all automated- Call 1(800)244-6397 ext. 2506 and Press "2"

The weekend was filled with Mimi and Lu news!

On Saturday morning, I woke up to find Mimi and Lu on San Diego 6 News . They featured a selection from our new collection as part of a Summer Fashions piece with Cecilia Boutique. Boutique employee, Jessica Delee- also of RoseRags clothing- did an amazing job in her television debut. That's her hand below, showing off the Dina Ring. Thanks to Jessica and Cecilia Boutique for including Mimi and Lu!

By the time Sunday rolled around it was time to wind down and relax in our jewelry making class. Jen (of Jennifer Rea Jewelry by Design) and I had a great time teaching the combo class and we are looking forward to scheduling the next class. Thanks to everyone who attended- your necklaces were beautiful and we hope you enjoyed designing and making them.

Double Trouble

It seemed like every time I turned around lately, someone was having a baby. Is there a such thing as baby season? So this weekend, it was our turn and I became the aunt of TWINS! My sister gave birth to Anthony Leon (4lb 12oz) and Maryanne Rose (3lb 7oz). It was a bit unexpected but all is well and mom and babies are recovering in the hospital. Can't wait for them to come home from the NICU so I can hold them. Nicole expects they will become little gymnasts (taking after their dad, Charlie Tamayo, who is training for 2012) but I'm secretly planning to turn Maryanne into a chic fashionista so I can adorn her in all sorts of jewelry. Whatever and whoever they turn out to be, we are just so happy they are here and doing well. Welcome Anthony and Maryanne!

Our First Jewelry Class!!

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our wire wrap jewelry class. Together with Jen Rea, of Jennifer Rea Jewelry by Design, Mimi and Lu held it's first jewelry making class at Cecilia Boutique in Mission Hills. Our intent was to have a class that was fun, relaxing and accessible. It was great to see each person come up with their own unique design, choosing from a colorful selection of beads and stones. Everyone walked out with a new skill and a pair of earrings they designed and produced themselves. (Not to mention they were treated to a 15% off discount at Cecilia Boutique on any purchase they made that day!!)

Quite a pair.

It's never too late for true love. Ask my grandma. Sometimes I'd catch my 90-something year old grandparents flirting. Sometimes it was hard to remember that their 16 year marriage started when they were in their late 70's/early 80's.

My "real grandfather", and my grandma's first husband, died in a car accident 32 years into their marriage. They owned a nightclub and bowling alley in rural Ohio and had 5 children, one who died at birth. Of the remaining 4, one has Multiple Sclerosis, one has battled Brain Cancer (twice), one has Multiple Myeloma (form of bone marrow cancer) and the the fourth, my mother, is the "caretaker". At 96, after seeing her family through every hardship, there's still one thing that consistently puts a smile on her face- Muxie.

After my grandma's first and second husband's passed away, she reconnected with a man she'd known from her days in the nightclub. Muxie had been the owner of Budweiser's midwest distributing company and was the one who delivered beer to her bar so many years prior. It didn't take long for him to pick up and move to California to be with my grandmother. Together at last, they were each others' true love. I've never seen her glow and giggle as much as she has with him.

Muxie is the only grandfather I really ever knew. He felt like a grandfather. In typical grandparent fashion, he'd always have cash appearing out of his pockets when we'd visit, insisting we put it in ours. Everyday, without fail, his signature lunch was a fried bologna sandwich and a Budweiser. Ordering anything but a Budweiser when we were out to dinner was a no-no. At 98, he was still 'sneaking' potato chips and cookies, hiding them from my grandmother. He was goofy in his own quiet way and caring in a sweet and subtle way. When his sight started to fail him and he could no longer drive, he plucked flowers from the backyard to give to my grandma on her birthday. He was a giver his entire life, involved with his community, even putting kids through college who weren't his own.

A couple days before he died, my grandmother (who, may I remind you, is pushing 100 years old) told me these have been the best 16 years of her life. What an interesting perspective to consider-- No matter how you feel today, whatever you are struggling with or whatever paths in life didn't seem to turn your way- you can be 50/60/70 years old and you just never know- the best may be yet to come.

Loved by so many, he will be missed. I know he'd want us to munch on some potato chips and toast him with a Budweiser in his honor.

Gold WHAT?

When asked what my gold jewelry is made of, nine times out of ten, I get one of two responses to my answer of "gold filled"- Either a look of utter confusion or the response- "Oh it's plated" (not true!) I thought I'd address it here, since it can be confusing and seeing that the difference between GOLD PLATED and GOLD FILL is tremendous! Here is the actual breakdown:

Gold Filled: Gold filled is an actual layer of gold-pressure bonded to another metal. Gold filled is not to be confused with gold plating as filled literally has 100% more gold than gold plating. Gold filled is much more valuable and tarnish resistant. It does not flake off, rub off or turn colors. Anyone who can wear gold can wear gold filled without worries of any allergic reaction to the jewelry.

Gold-plated: A base metal such as steel or brass is dipped into a bath of electroplating solution, with a lump of solid gold. When an electric current is applied, a thin layer of gold is deposited on the metal. Since the plating is quite thin, the plate (and hence the color) on findings can wear off if not cared for properly.

Vermeil: (Pronounced: Vermay) is sterling silver that has been gold-plated. Most vermeil is plated with 22K-24K gold. This is a good combination for those with allergy to normal, plated jewelry items. The difference between vermeil, and gold-filled, is in the thickness of the gold and the base metal used. In vermeil, the base is sterling silver.

Government Regulation: Gold filled items are regulated by the government versus gold plate which is not regulated at all. In the jewelry industry the quantity of gold must be at least 1/20th by weight of the total product.

Lifetime Products: Gold-Filled items are generally considered lifetime products, and the gold layer will not wear off, as it will in electroplated products.

Most Mimi & Lu jewelry is Gold filled. I do incorparate pieces that are vermeil or plated and that is always noted in their descriptions. Sometimes it's because I think it's a special piece that is not available in gold fill or it's because I want to offer some budget friendly pieces in my line. My recommendation with anything plated is to take extra precaution when it comes to care. Don't wear in the shower (or ocean!), put on after you apply lotions or perfumes and store in an airtight container or baggie.

Now that we have that cleared up, I want to quickly address the rising price of Gold and Silver. To give you a good idea of how much it's risen, in June of 1999 the price was at a low of $252.90/oz.(troy ounce) In January of 2008, it hit $865.35/oz. In March 2011 it hit $1432.57/oz. Since April 2001 the gold price has more than tripled in value against the US dollar. Silver has seen similar jumps.

Ive tried to keep Mimi & Lu's prices constant and always consider the price of metal when designing a piece. It has not been easy to adjust to the rising cost of these metals. I think it helps for the customer to know the value of the metals in order to understand the price of a piece.(and can therefore have a greater appreciation for the piece they purchase) If there is a long gold filled chain or if the wire used is a thick gauge, the price will likely jump.

I welcome any questions about this and I hope it's help clear up any questions about what metals I use, why and their value.

It's been over a MONTH since the last blog post which is shameful. I could give an entire laundry list of excuses- some very good ones- but if you know me, you know how much I hate excuses. Instead, Ill just tell one story.

Carefree kid.

When I was a kid, I was - how should I put it- messy. My brain was in a thousand places at once and eventually my room would explode into piles of laundry and stacks of school supplies. When it became time to clean up, I'd often feel overwhelmed and my mom always said the same thing- "Just pick one thing up and put it away" - So that's what I would do. Pick one thing up, put it away- pick another thing up, put it away. It always worked. Luckily, I've managed to leave (most) of the piles of laundry behind me but tasks pile up and feel overwhelming that mantra still plays in my head- "Pick one thing up, and put it away."

A couple weeks ago, my computer crashed. While most of my files were saved- my website was not. It was still visible and working online but within my program it vanished and I just so happen to use a particular program where it cannot simply be reloaded, it must be rebuilt piece by piece, page by page, link by link. I felt heartbroken that hours and hours of work had slipped away so suddenly. The task of rebuilding something I'd worked months (years?) on was overwhelming but once again my mom's mantra replayed in my head-"Pick one thing up and put it away." In this case, it was about starting with one piece, one page , one element and then moving on to the next. Tackling it piece by piece thinking only about the page in front of me and not about the million other pages to go.

It worked. And Im thrilled to say the website has been rebuilt and in the process I was able to rework the site and add NEW pieces and pages. A few pages are still under construction but I hope you'll take a peek at the new pieces and let me know what you think! You might find a few other new surprises as well. (Classes!!) It's almost February! Wow. I apologize for being so absent during the month of January....I expected a slow down after the holidays but one thing rolled into another and here we are just as busy as ever. Don't worry, I'm going to make it up to you, but more on that later.

Now how about that for a New Years Resolution?

Let me introduce you to my cousin, Dino. He was once deemed the “Laker Fan of the Year. (Literally-brought through the locker room and onto the court.) He’s the president of the Metallica Fan Club (No joke- Los Angeles Chapter). Dino is son, husband, father, Godfather, uncle and brother and has always been the ‘rock’ in his extended family of 50, not to mention life of the party.

Dino also has cancer. In November of 2010, Dino was diagnosed with a very rare form of bladder cancer- Neuroendocrine differential Small Cell cancer of the bladder. He's already undergoing chemotherapy and faces bladder removal surgery soon. While this type of cancer is aggressive, we know Dino is a fighter and will be back at the Laker games in no time.

After all the jewelry has been made and shipped, my Christmas begins. It's been going pretty much the same way for some time and it comes in three parts. I'll go backwards.

3. Christmas Day- Always at my grandparents and most likely a lot of eating. This year, at 96 and 97, my grandparents were still up socializing when we left, exhausted. Since Lucca came along, my grandpa's favorite past time seems to be sneaking salami, crackers and cheese to the dog.

2. Christmas Eve Day- For the past few years we have been hosting a brunch or lunch at our place for my immediate family. We ate, exchanged gifts, and went for a walk to S.D. Harbor and through Little Italy. (Then, we were hungry again so we ended up at Sushi Diner (YUM!)- Have you been?!?)

1. TAMOUSH PARTY- This has been a tradition since before I was born. Usually the weekend before Christmas, all of the Tamoushes get together under one roof. It's chaotic, noisy and possibly quite shocking to a newcomer (i.e. new spouse). And despite the fact that you usually run the risk of being 'booed' or thoroughly embarrassed at some point during the party, every Tamoush looks forward to this day every year.

Rainy Day Projects

This weekend we woke up to cloudy skies, rain and what San Diegans would consider 'chilly' weather. (our Bostonian friends are rolling their eyes...) And while I loved that it gave me a chance to put on my boots and hat, it also gave me permission to spend Saturday morning in my pjs with a hot glue gun, loads of ribbon and a giant cup of coffee. (Holiday box for Keurig of course!).

Two years ago, a couple days after my wedding, my good friend (from ReadySetWife- check it out!) and I were lounging on Coronado Beach- the same beach my husband had proposed on. While dipping our toes in the water, we each found a full sand dollar. We were thrilled! Then we suddenly found another. Wow, what are the chances!? Wait, then another and another.... I think you know where this is going. It was like we stumbled upon a sand dollar graveyard. You had to look carefully as the tide rolled out for 'bumps' in the sand that caused a ripple in the water and then jump on it. Here I was, with a friend who I rarely see, who lives 3000 miles away and we weren't even talking. We became so fixated on these sand dollars- collecting them and then bringing them back to our blanket, methodically lying them out- that I'm very sure we became 'those crazy ladies' to others at the beach.

It left me with a very happy memory of my wedding week and the friends who flew across the country to spend the occasion with us- AND- a bucket full of sand dollars sitting in a cupboard. Until now. Twenty of them (a fraction of what I have) would become dangling ornaments- painted gold and adhered to festive ribbon. Deciding it needed a bit more, I hand stamped muslin bags and this became the packaging. It was nice to take a tiny departure from jewelry to enjoy a rainy Saturday morning project. The rain has since lifted and it's back to jewelry- with of course one thing remaining the same- that giant cup of coffee.

Drama Queen (or King)

My dog, Lucca, is dramatic. Actually, dramatic doesn't really say it well. Over-dramatic? Melodramatic? Ridiculous, is what I'd call it. Let's start with his yawn. This comes to mind because this morning he dragged himself off the couch, waltzed into our bedroom and in his downward dog yoga position let out the loudest, most over the top yawn I've ever heard. It's starts with low rumbling and sorta crescendos to the end - which is topped off with the highest pitch screeching squeal you can imagine. He's basically saying, HELLO EVERYBODY-I'M UP AND I'M TIRED AND I WANT EVERYONE TO KNOW IT.

His dramatic nature doesn't end there. It's everything. If he is excited to see you- he's on 10- usually on his tippy toes he lets out a low howl. With his lips together it's almost like a low grumbling "Im trying to talk" sound. If he is tired but can't get comfortable you can bet he will let out a HUGE sigh- expanding his chest up as far as it will go and then letting it deflate. If he is scared? Well today, he jumped 5 feet & knocked me over all because he saw this terribly "frightening" statue on our walk. (see flower pic- part of the Urban Tree project at the Port of San Diego)

Is your dog this dramatic?? Or should I just go ahead and ship this dog to Hollywood for acting classes...

Moving Clips

I'm no stranger to moving- I moved 8 times before 8th grade. I moved across the country on a 'whim' at 22 and have moved into 4 different houses since being back on the west coast. Moving is a pain, yes, but there is always this exciting side of exploring your new space and creatively making that space your own. I've been absent lately and haven't had a new post in some time. It's been a chaotic couple months and life got crazy (whose isn't?). After the dog bite incident (which is ongoing), we had to move (on short notice) & got hit by a car (please stop texting and driving, people!) I'm finally playing catch up and in between designing the new collection, working on updating the website and settling into our new home I'll suddenly think, "Did I brush my hair?" "What about my teeth?" "What's this stain on my shirt?" Sometimes I feel like this slobbery mess of a photo looks and ultimately, in the end, we just have to shake it off.

Love at the Jersey Shore

Well, I didn't run into Snooki or see the Situation (I'm not even totally sure who that is) but I did get a taste of the Jersey Shore. So, what did I love the most? What's not to love? Tanning on the beach (sorry guys, no gym or laundry...); bobbing in the waves of the (very warm) ocean; playing Uno & making s'mores at the relaxing beach house ; and of course a little mini-golf! (Apparently a Jersey Shore must do.) I also fell in love..... with this adorable dog named Sophie. She made herself at home in this little convenience store by the Barnegat Lighthouse. Im pretty sure she loved me back.

I didnt remove my LoveScript Necklace the entire trip (look closely, its on!). I love it! Soon you can have one of your own. It will be available on the website in the coming months. Email me if you'd like me to let you know when it's listed!!

Christmas in July

I'm already excited for the holiday collection. I've got most of it semi planned out in my head and I couldn't resist doing some designing now. Of course, everyone else in the fashion world has already completed their holiday collection but most of my orders are immediates so I don't put the collection together until mid August or so...

These pictures don't do these earrings justice (in fact the pictures make them look a little like we've got 2 pairs of eyeballs spying on us) but in person, they feel solid and sparkly- perfect for that holiday party you are already planning your outfit for. Okay, maybe not quite yet, but I can just about hear the Jingle Bells and smell the cinnamon pine cones already...

Dear Stranger,

I want to say thank you. Last weekend while out of town & at the beach, my husband was bitten severely on the hand by a dog that was trying to attack our dog, Lucca. As soon as it happened, our world went into chaos mode. As much as I tried to keep it together and figure out a way to get my injured, pale husband, confused dog and beach gear to the car in record time, I felt like I was falling apart.

We had made it across the beach and up the stairs to the road and not one person- despite all the stares- stepped into help. And then, out of nowhere, you stepped in. You saw me frantically sitting my husband down at the top of the beach stairs, arms overflowing with towels, beach bags and blankets with a 135lb dog in tow, dropped all of your things and said, 'let me help you'. You held my dog and sat with my husband as I ran to pull around the car.

I never got your name and I don't remember a face but your calm and reassuring nature stuck out to me so much so that I actually made note of it in my head amoungst the thousands of thoughts racing through my brain. You gently suggested I give my husband some water and reminded me to type the hospital into my GPS before pulling away. Im pretty sure you smiled and said 'Ok now, have a good day' or 'everything will be fine' as we pulled away.

Sometimes it's the kindness of strangers that gets us through an experience like that and so we'd like to thank you for being our kind stranger.

Pretty Shiny Sparkly - The Emma Ring

Sometimes we compromise comfort or practicality for fashion and design. We love a design so much that while it might not be the most practical piece, we can't part with the design. But who says you can't have the best of both worlds?

The Saffron Ring is a great piece with a look all it's own, however, for some gals with 'on the go' lives, free hanging charm rings just aren't practical for all day wear. Insert Pretty Shiny Sparkly. Style blogger, Kristina Medhus loved the Saffron Ring, but presented me with a vision on making a more wearable version. With her vision in mind, I went back to the design process and began to rework the style. After a week of collaboration, we emerged with brand new style- the Emma Ring. Featured on her outfit post, "Pretty in Pink Pleats', the Emma Ring is wearable and durable yet still carries that delicate and intricate essence of the Saffron Ring.
I love that custom work and collaborations get me as a designer to think about a piece in a new way or in a way I hadn't previously considered. The Emma Ring (co-designed with Pretty Shiny Sparkly and named after Kristina's adorable cat!) is a limited edition piece currently available on our website. Playing Make Believe

I'm decorating a house we haven't moved into. In fact, we haven't even found one. Yet, I've found myself stuck on Anthropologie's website putting together my imaginary house. It's my favorite part of their brand- the home section. I will, reluctantly, admit I have a shoebox of knobs I've slowly collected from rummaging through their store sales -bought with the 'I'll use these someday' mentality- and truly believing that- but secretly liking them just as much sitting in the box. We do have to move soon, so the itch to redo and redecorate has started to creep into my brain. We've had no luck (yet) in finding our new home, so until then, it's scouring the internet till midnight on a Friday playing make believe with my online finds.

Cupcake Cravings

I came across this Creature Comforts blog post and it got me obsessing about cupcakes again. I'm not a cook. God bless my husband who politely compliments my cooking, even though Im pretty sure I put breakfast sausage in the pasta last week. I'm not a baker either, but I've always enjoyed trying. Even as a kid my mom would find me in the kitchen at midnight covered in flour, pans spilling outta the sink, baking away. Sometimes (okay a lot of times) I'd forget an ingredient or mix up a measurement and, well, things don't always taste the same when you use baking powder instead of baking soda or forget the eggs completely.
So when we came across the book "A Baker's Field Guide to Cupcakes" at a Crate & Barrel Outlet store a couple years ago, my baking wheels starting turning again. The recipes are pretty intense but the outcomes are incredible! Granted, it often took 8 hours over the course of 2 days to come up with 10 cupcakes but (almost) always worth it. Yes, sometimes Im still up at midnight pouring over a recipe, but nowadays I always remember the eggs.

Picking out what recipe I'll attempt for the Fourth--(better start tonight so we'll have them by Sunday!)

A Day in LA

Yesterday, I dropped Lucca off at his brother's house and spent the day up in and around L.A. I was so excited to finally meet the girls at J.Serraino- a boutique in Valencia, CA. They've been super supportive of my line for years and since my reps always took care of in store appointments, I only knew their voices from phone calls over the years. It was great to put faces to the names and if you live or visit the Santa Clarita area, you must stop in to their boutique. Aside from the great lines they carry and fantastic finds- they are so sweet and welcoming & I guarantee you will enjoy your shopping experience. Plus, they will be receiving a new shipment of mimi & lu in the next few weeks!
After Valencia, I headed to downtown LA's garment district to do some research and supply shopping. I've avoided L.A. like the plague and it was about time I headed down and spent some time there. It was Market week so there was a lot going on. Since I'm still on the hunt for the perfect ribbon for my packaging, I checked out all the trim stores (still haven't found the perfect match!) and then headed out of downtown towards the beach areas.

My last stop was at M.E. and Blue in Venice. If you haven't been to this boutique you have to go! M.E. repped my line when I was first getting started and today has her own store and clothing line. I love what M.E. has transformed this bungalow space into. Especially the mural on the exterior. You can't miss it driving down the street. I spent a couple hours catching up and talking shop and left with a cute, casual one shoulder dress in purple. (I finally added something to my wardrobe that's not white, black or gray!) And I love it.
Picked a tired Lucca up after a 13 hour day and we are both spending today catching up. (him on sleep, me on work!)

You're Fired! (Again)

I was laid off from an article about being laid off. That's right, you heard me. Not just any article but an article in Marie Claire- a huge publication. Where did it go? (I dont know!) What was it about? (Being laid off) Wait, you were laid off??

Yes, 5 years ago I worked for an established jewelry design company in their production department. I had been upfront with the fact that I made and sold my own jewelry from the start and enjoyed designing my own pieces in my free time. Even though my work had been praised, Id been promoted and given a raise in my time there, one day I was called into my boss's office and told I was being let go. She said my work was "not up to par" and when I pressed for a better explanation, she admitted she felt threatened by my personal jewelry designs and did not want me working there.

So when the question "Were you fired from one job, only to comeback at the next?" came through Marie Claire's twitter feed, I thought YES! I told my story and explained where I am today with my business selling to stores across the country. To my surprise - they called. I was interviewed and followed up with (twice), had me send a picture of myself and was told to look for my story in the July issue. They explained they would even put a link to my website! Of course, I was thrilled.

The July issue hit the stands and I flipped through the pages for the story. Hmmm... flip through again, it's probably small and I missed it. But I didn't. It was almost that feeling of being fired (again), screaming "you're not good enough!"

An email to the reporter has yet to be returned, but I've let go of that letdown. Whatever the reason- my nervous, drawing a blank interview or editing reasons or the story just wasn't what they were looking for- it happens and that's okay. It's a good reminder of what comes with owning your own business - you have to take the letdowns with the triumphs and recognize it's all part of the process.

As I said in my interview, I did not let that moment (of being fired) define me and this moment won't either. I'll keep working hard, doing what I love and see what opportunities await me. I'll continue to enjoy my issues of Marie Claire and one day I know I'll open it and see my work staring back at me.

Lately, I've been lagging with the blogging. And not cause I'm being lazy, or distracted by Oprah & Ellen or putting the dog before my work (ok, sometimes but he is hard to ignore) but because it simply feels like there aren't enough hours in the day. I know I'm not alone in that feeling either. Everyone is trying to do everything at once and I'm no different. If assistants would work for coffee and compliments, I'd have 10.

Mostly, Ive been busy putting this new collection together. Sometimes collections just sorta fall into place while other times it takes a lot of tweaking, reworking and editing to get it to a point where Im happy with it. This time around it was the latter.

Thought I'd share some of the pieces in this new collection. It's available to retailers first but will be (in part) on the website not too long after so keep your eyes peeled!!

Freeloader

Lucca spends most of his day finding a new position on the couch. I've mentioned before that Danes are couch potatoes but I'm starting to think he's taking advantage of this title. Sometimes I'm not sure how he can possibly still be snoring when his head has been hanging upside down for an hour and all the blood is rushing to his head. Recently, we've taken to call him 'the freeloader' and have been waiting for him to get up in the morning, brush his teeth, put on a tie and go to work.

We're still waiting.

(Although, to be fair, he did make it to the top of Cowell's Mountain recently so we won't label him as a total bum (yet!).)

New Obsession

I rarely make jewelry for myself. Don't get me wrong, I wear my own designs all the time but I don't often make pieces specifically for personal use. Usually, my personal pieces comes from either extra inventory, pieces that had slight flaws or old samples.
This past week I had a sudden desire to design a personal piece that was bold, fun and eye catching- using all neutral tones. Currently, my favorite crystal shade is Silver and so instead of designing an entirely new piece, I thought, well why not stack three Eva's of the same color- and viola! - exactly what I was looking for.

My sister snapped this camera photo while visiting our 94 year old grandma this weekend & sent it with the caption "she had on the cutest outfit today". I have to agree. Sporting some highwaisted cuffed shorts with a tucked in 3/4 length sleeve top she sure hasn't let age get in the way of style. Not to mention she sure knows how to strike a pose.

New Stores Galore

It's been a busy year for mimi&lu as new stores have been picking up the line from San Diego to San Francisco.

In San Diego, you can now find mimi&lu in the Mission Hills boutique, Cecilia. Formerly Christies, new owner Elizabeth reopened in December as Cecilia Boutique. It's filled with great finds- including my favorite scent Kai- and I'm thrilled mimi&lu now has a small place in the store.

Up the coast a bit is Mog & Rue. Located close to the coast in Encinitas, Mog&Rue also changed owners last year. New owner, Kristin, picked out some of mimi&lu's most colorful pieces - perfect for spring and summer. Jewelry should arrive mid-June so be sure to stop in and take a peek. Added bonus- this store offeres Fashion Classes!

Head north even further and you'll find Viva Diva in San Rafael and Oakland. They have brought in mimi&lu to both of their locations and I'm thrilled! Northern California holds a special place in my heart since it is where I grew up and spent my childhood. We bounced around from San Rafael to the East Bay so I love that mimi&lu headed back to my roots.

And I couldnt be happier to have Beyond the Alley take in mimi&lu to their SF Marina location. I love the city and what a fantastic part of town. Break a Leg Laughing

One year ago this week, I sat with tears in my eyes listening to my vet tell me that "one day you will look back and laugh about this". I thought to myself, 'this guy is crazy'. Lucca had run into another dog at the park and fractured his leg. It was going to require a cast up to his armpit for weeks. He was 6 months old, 70lbs and growing. Lucca had just survived Parvo a couple months before and this was a huge blow emotionally, physically & financially.

The first day, it took my husband and I probably 20 minutes to simply get Lucca from the vet's door into the car. The next 5-6 weeks would be filled with tears, frustration, sleepless nights and sleepy days. Living on the second floor, we had to carry him up and down the stairs so he could go out, which took a lot of mental preparation when I was home alone. Evenings were spent blow drying & sprinkling baby powder between his toes that slightly stuck out from the bottom of his cast, to keep them dry. The remainder of the day usually included trying to get him to take pain medication & sedatives or making sure he wasn't moving or trying to walk- very difficult for the active puppy & social butterfly that he is.

It seemed like every other dog was outside, playing, making friends and then there was Lucca, giving me sad puppy eyes swinging this 'bat' around and practically saying to me "why did you put this thing on me?!?"

Thanks to his doctors from Fido's Surgeon- especially Rainy who kept me sane- and to our vet clinic, Market Street Vet, who always takes good care of us, we are all still standing one year later. We often talk about how trying that time was or recall small things like how we'd put him in the car and drive him to the beach just so he could look out the window and smell - and yes, once in a while, we even look back and laugh.

I had a request to post photos of where I work here on the blog and since it's not everyday I get a request, I am happy to do so. Right now, I work in a studio/office out of my house, which is basically one room I have taken over. Since the people who work for me work out in the field, this set up suits me. I spend most of my time between the chair at my jewelry desk and the chair at my computer desk. I'm sure I switch chairs at least 10 times a day. I had my studio/office painted yellow because I love the color and wanted something bright and cheery.
I've been doing the 'work from home' scenario now for 3-4 years and I've definitely learned a few things. I thought I'd post some tips for working from home as well as some huge misconceptions:

Gonna work from home? Here are some things that help me survive:
- Have a set wake up time in the morning and get up. Then get dressed. And not in sweats.
- Have a routine or schedule. I do all of my 'me' stuff in the morning- workout, check personal emails, run an errand. I know once I start working, Ill never get that stuff in.
- Make sure your workspace is defined. If you have receipts on the kitchen table, product on the coffee table, and packing materials on the dining table it's just going to be more chaotic.'
-Make time for breaks and force yourself to set aside time where you are not looking at work. This is a tough one for me.
- Coffee maker. I can't live without my Keurig.

And here are a few things to consider:
-It's lonely. Something I did not anticipate. I love people and when it's just me and Lucca, well- sometimes the dog gets an ear full.
-You wear a LOT of hats. There are plenty of times I wish I could call the "IT" guy. Instead, Im usually on hold with HP or have my fax machine in pieces.
- You never 'go home' since you are already there. Stir-crazy anyone??

Project Runway Flashback

I've been a Project Runway fan since day 1. The 7th Season just wrapped up last week so I thought this would be a perfect time to mention Jay. I don't normally remember specific names or pieces- my brain just doesn't seem to retain this information long term but there is one Project Runway winner whose final show really stuck in my head. Jay was the winner of Season 1. When his runway show concluded, I thought- WOW. The colors, textures, patterns and personality were right up my alley. I love when art or fashion leaves you with that feeling of motivation. It's inspirational and makes me ,as an artist, want to find a way to evoke feeling from the people who view my work.

Old friends

I've been friends with this tree for 9 years. We met in 2001. I was new to Boston and found him one day when I was wandering around the Common and through the Public Garden. I didn't know a lot of people and spent most of my free time taking photos, creating prints and exploring the city. There was something about this tree I was drawn to- it was completely different from all the trees around it. It looked almost cartoon-ish, but at the same time beautiful. He's just as magical in the Winter and Fall as he is in the Spring and Summer. I've visited this tree in hard times & happy times, shared him with friends & family- and he is always, without a doubt, on my 'to visit' list when we take trips back to Boston.

So in the spirit of "Earth Day" which was "designed to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth's environment", I thought I'd share my story about this tree. If you happen upon him, I hope you will take a picture and send it along. It's always nice to see an old friend.

This King's a Queen

Snapped this pic at the SD Zoo-- it's amazing how we, as artists, can put so much effort into creating something beautiful and in nature, it's just simply there. This peacock looks like the "queen"- perched atop a branch, watching over the flamingos in a long gorgeous gown. Only judging by those feathers, this bird's a 'king' in a dress- so now that I think about it, he's still a 'queen'.

Look at that Horse!

Well, actually it's a dog.

Today a homeless woman yelled at me for having my dog in the 'city' (i hardly call where I live the city) and that he should be running in the 'wild'. This is a common misconception that we often encounter. It's one of the top 10 questions we get- "You must have big house. Do you have a huge yard??" In fact, Lucca would much rather be sitting on the couch watching Animal Planet, than running loose in the 'wild'. That goes for many great danes. They are couch potatoes. We, in fact, do not have a big house and we do have a yard but unless I'm out there with him, he'd rather be inside-yes- back on the couch.

While I'm at it, I thought I'd address the other most commonly asked questions in no particular order:
10. No, we do not have a saddle for him (if you think you are the first person to say this, you are sorely mistaken)
9. Yes, you may take a picture of him (he loves the camera)
8. No, he does not sleep in the bed (although he does sleep on the couch)
7. Yes, we are glad we kept his ears floppy too. (there's really no logical point in cropping)
6. No, your kid can't ride him (although maybe for the right price...)
5. Yes, I knew he was going to get this big. (um....I hope that was apparent when I picked out a great dane)

4. No actually, I am walking HIM (although I know you think its funny to say he is walking ME.)
3. He needs the same amount of exercise as other dogs... in some cases less.
2. He is 16 months, 132lbs, eats 8 cups a kibble a day, it's called brindle and YES he is still growing.
1. No matter how many times you call him a horse, he still isn't a horse.

Work, work, work, play, work work..

New Pieces have been posted on the website! I finally had some time to crop pics and list more pieces. That "free"time happened to be between 9pm and 1am on Saturday night with SNL in the background (who in the world is this Justin Beiber guy anyway??) and my favorite cookies to keep me going (see previous post) but those of you who also run your own business probably agree that that's what Saturday nights are for. Recently, I met a buyer on a Saturday and she asked me if I 'worked' on Saturdays- and I smiled. I work whenever there is work to be done- which is all the time. Of course, I make sure to set aside time that is strictly 'non'working time- but Saturdays, Friday nights and Holidays certainly aren't off limits. What makes it okay for me is that, for the most part, Im enjoying what I'm doing so it doesn't always feel like work.

The new pieces listed include the Patricia necklace and bracelet- Its part of my current collection and they seem to be on just about every store's order. The necklace is a great choice for a long necklace (32") that makes a statement. Plus you can choose from 12 colors!

The bracelet version is great because it's tall (@2.75" from top to bottom), comes in Gold or Silver and you can wear it on your wrist or slightly up the arm.

Made my favorite cookie recipe Friday night and since I can't share an actual cookie with you I thought I'd share the recipe. It's easy and impossible to mess up. And my favorite part is that you don't even have to break out the mixer...all you need is a whisk and wooden spoon.

Ingredients
1c. butter, softened
3/4c sugar
1 egg yolk, lightly beaten
2 tsp. vanilla extract
2.5c all purpose flour
1/2c semisweet chocolate chips (or more if you are like me and want extra chocolate)
For Coating:
1.5tbsp sugar
1.5tbsp cinnamon

1. Preheat the oven to 375degrees. Line cookies sheets with parchment or grease pans.
2. Put butter and sugar into a bowl and mix well with a wooden spoon, then beat in the egg yolk and vanilla extract. Stir flour into the mixture and add the chocolate chips. Batter will be thick and you might need to knead verses stir. Mix until thoroughly combined.
3. For the coating mix together the sugar and cinnamon in a shallow dish. (I like to add a little more sugar than cinnamon)Scoop out tablespoons of the cookie dough, roll them into balls and then roll them in the cinnamon mixture to coat.
4. Bake for 12-14 minutes (Mine are always done in 12).Cool on racks.
Makes @ 30

Experiment with different mix ins- Instead of chocolate chips try peanut butter chips. Or add raisins, nuts, dried cranberries- whatever is your favorite!

Easter and Earthquakes

I don't like earthquakes. In 1989, I shared a room with my sister and I told her she was banging too hard on the wall (she was hanging a picture I think). But that shaking turned into what became one of the largest earthquakes in Northern California (Loma Prieta). A freeway collapsed and a piece of the Bay Bridge fell. Yesterday's 7.2 earthquake, centered not all that far from here in Mexico, was a little like deja vu. Those feelings of anxiety race back. I was helping my husband with a project at the SD Firehouse Museum, where he volunteers (which was closed for the day) and my first thought was GET OUT. We were in a very old building that is crammed with all sorts of items on high shelves, hanging from the ceiling, etc. My second thought was Lucca. I imagined he would be freaking out at home, barking or crying (despite his size he is a big baby) and that he'd possibly peed out of fright. We hurried home, my mind racing, to a snoring dog lounged comfortably on the couch. Maybe I should take a relaxation cue from the dog. Lesson learned. Whose the baby now?

Yesterday was Easter and while this pic wasn't taken yesterday, I figured the yellow flowers are a bit Easter-y. Here, Lucca is channeling his inner 'Flower Child'. ;)

Knock it off!

Yes, it's true, I saw a mimi&lu knock off! Over the weekend, we stopped by the SouthPark Walkabout. Four times a year business's in Southpark, a cute San Diego neighborhood, open their doors late into the night and the crowds mingle, grab a drink and shop. I stopped into a few stores and as I checked out the jewelry I found myself staring and one of my designs-only it wasn't mine. I've seen this before but not so spot on. Now, before I go any further, I will say that I firmly believe that it is very possible for work to result in similar designs even though they were developed in separate minds. I think there is a term for this but it escapes me now. So, yes, this very well couldve been the case. This particular item was, however, almost identical to one of my signature best sellers(which I wont mention by name) and it also happened to be made by a local designer (whom I also won't mention by name). I made a decision early on to simply accept that this just happens. Intentionally or unintentionally, it's going to happen and if I'm going to let it bother me, I'll end up wasting a lot of energy. For me, it's flattering in the sense that someone thought the design was so good it was worth replicating. One half of me feels like giving a big sigh, like 'really?' But the other half manages to disregard any feelings of discouragement because it drives me to develop more distinct designs. The truth is, I've usually already moved on from the design to something new and exciting and fresh.

The rest of the walkabout was a nice evening out and I popped into some stores that I plan on revisiting. Clariy Soap & Candles was one of my favorites and I wasn't even there for the soap or candles! They also sell their furnishings and I saw rustic tables, chairs and a large chest that I would've been happy to lug home. I'll def. be back when I'm looking to fill a space in my home.

Lately, a lot of my day, while not filling orders, is spent doing research which means long hours in front of my computer. Sometimes my eyeballs feel like they are going to fall out of my head, so I've recently tried to force myself to take some breaks. Today, it was the meeting my husband downtown during lunch to pick up some flowers at the farmer's market. Sometimes, it's fixing my favorite meal. Since there's not much that's new in the mimi&lu world, I thought Id just share some pics.

I am missing living in San francicso tonight. Tomorrow morning I want to leave my apartment and walk up the hill to Market to catch the 22 Fillmore and go to work at the jewelry store.

I read this person's facebook status today and it spun me into a day of 'city dreaming'. Some days, I want to leave my place, stop at Dunkin Donuts (Medium hazelnut with cream, no sugar), hop on the Red Line, find a dirty Metro to read on the way and wander through the chaos of Downtown crossing. My 'grass is greener scenario is in Boston but really I think it could be any major city. There is a distinct energy and as an artist, it's easy to feed off the fact that the heart of the city triggers all of your senses. And only in a city (maybe only in a city such as Boston) could you find a woman hanging out of a 2nd story window with a bucket to get her mail. I sure haven't seen that in San Diego.

What I've found I love about the city is that despite being submerged in a sea of people, you can remain strangely anonymous, yet the sense of community and camaraderie is so strong.

But let's be honest- Being a 10 minute drive from what feels like a relaxing beach vacation isn't so bad either. Maybe when daydreaming about what we love we have to take a moment to remember what we have.

Yellow Weeds and Green Tomatoes

Spring is a couple days away and while it's been feeling a bit like summer around here, it's still refreshing to see the signs of spring. These yellow flowers popped up in the lawn recently. It's possible they are actually weeds since our 'lawn' is really a mix of grass, weeds, clovers, etc,- but either way, these cute little flowers make me happy as yellow is one of my favorite colors. (Have I mentioned my studio/office is yellow???) I also checked in on my "garden" (I use the term lightly since I have only 2 plants- the rest have died or been stolen- (I think by animals, but Im not entirely sure)) and I am closely monitoring the tomatoes- all of which are green. I'm a huge fan of monochromatic anything but in this case I'm really crossing my fingers the tomato will eventually turn RED.

So I found the things I love-Yellow and monochromatic themes- unexpectedly and it's reminded me that I want more of both in my designs. Who knew I'd find inspiration in my front yard?
Apparently, Lucca also found inspiration... or he just has the same love of yellow flowers as I do. (Let's hope he doesnt find the tomatoes..) Happy Spring!

Luck of the Irish (or Italian in this case)

Here's wishing my grandpa a happy 97th birthday! This italian (so no, not my grandpa by blood, but I do wish I had his longevity genes) enjoys donuts and coffee in the morning and bologna & beer in the afternoon. Is that the secret to a long life? Or maybe it's just because he is a very sweet and giving person. (and beer in the afternoon probably doesnt hurt)

And at 95, my grandma- a bocce ball champion- is his perfect match.

Some things are better in our minds than in actual practice. We (me and the other "MI") actually had a moment to 'ourselves' (sans the LU) this weekend and spent some time finally using some christmas gift cards. I was at H&M (which should stand for 'Hit & Miss') when I fell in love with this dress. I always get wrapped up in crazy bright colors- not neon bright, but happy bright. I loved the ruffling at the top, a v-neck- (front and back) not to mention the dress was long (to the floor) and flowy. Perfect for sunny san diego and in my head I was already out the door with it. It's pretty amusing how fast something can go from perfect to pretty horrible in moments. When tried on, the dress gathered in all the wrong places, the ruffle under the bust stuck straight out like I had an orbit of ruffles around me- I looked like I was perhaps pregnant, wearing a monster muu muu and wanted everyone in the world to see me from a mile away. Maybe on the right person... but for me, it was much better in my mind.

Later that evening we came home to what Lucca probably thought was much better than it actually was. He pretty much figured out how a couch tastes and I'm guessing not as good as he had imagined but I wish he'd left it to one bite instead of, well, this many....

Mimi & Lu loves ME & Blue!

I'm not sure how I haven't mentioned ME & Blue yet. M.E. is a remarkable gal who took on my line as a sales rep when I was just a newbie. In 2009, she opened her own store in Venice, CA. I was sad to part ways with M.E., but excited for her and her new journey. And only one year later, what a journey it's been! Today, she not only runs her store ME & Blue AND designs the ME & Blue clothing label - she finds time to volunteer at a boxer dog rescue, keep up with her blog, and search high and low for awesome vintage finds for her store. So today I am catching up with M.E.'s blog and a link she posted led me to this dress from KENZO. If I were a 6 foot tall bohemian model, Id wear some version of this. But just looking at it makes me happy and lends some creative inspiration. Especially when it is the most perfectly sunny day here San Diego and I'd much rather getting some sun and gazing at the ocean with Lucca.

I spent much of the past few weeks planted in front of the computer and neglecting my jewelry table (where I'd much rather be)- But it's FINALLY paid off because the mimi&lu website has LAUNCHED! I selected some new pieces as well as some old favorites that are currently available online, but more will be listed soon.

Additionally, I am in the process of developing packaging for my online sales. My mission is to create pieces are special and precious to each person and feel like your own little treasure. And treasures should be properly packed and presented, so keep your eye out for the new packaging!

My version of a heart for valentine's day... the first strawberry to grow in our garden. I was thrilled to see something had actually grown and it took me a moment to decide to pick it since it was there all by it's lonesome. But I did and I'll wait anxiously to see more pop up. Every time I long for living in the city again- the subways, the crowds, the buildings- things like this remind me that the grass might not be as green on the other side as I think. (literally)

On a more disturbing note, the only other gardening success I'd had was a large bunch of fresh romaine lettuce that I'd watch grow into what would make a great salad for 4 or 5. However, only moments after picking my prize strawberry did I notice my lettuce was missing. Someone somewhere is enjoying a nice, large, fresh salad (or maybe that someone is in the background of this picture... Lucca does look quite satisfied there.)

So no matter how you feel this valentines day- triumphant like the strawberry or defeated like the lettuce- simply spend it with whatever it is you love- your loved one, your dog, your garden- whatever!

I've added two fantastic colors to the crystal collection which can be used in all your favorites from the Toby Rings, to the Eva Bracelets to the Melissa cuffs. The richness of the Red Magma will stand out but still has an earthy undertone. On the other hand (possibly literally!) is the Silver shade- This subtle color has a metallic feel that is great for everyday wear. While any crystal can be combined with either silver or gold, my personal preference is the red magma on gold and the silver shade on sterling silver. However you mix it up you are sure to love it! If you are one of those who collects the Eva Crystal Bangles Bracelets, you can now add these colors to your collection. The new colors may not be listed on the website yet but are currently available by special request. I love the new colors and can't wait to build them into the new pieces-- which are coming soon! J'adore. That's one of the only phrases I remember from 6th grade french class, but I am glad I do. Yesterday, a good friend brought me these amazing plates and bowls back from his trip to Paris- and I LOVE them. They are beautiful and odd at the same time. It's art on dinnerware which makes you contemplate whether you really want to be eating off them. After some investigation I found the artist's site- http://www.concettagallo.com/ - and have found an artist whose work I am now a fan of. It's colorful, whimsical, and includes a lot of interesting juxtaposition. Not only that, it reminds me as a designer and an artist to think outside of the box. (Thanks Chris!)

a break in the storm...

The sun peaked through briefly today so despite
my sore throat & fighting a fever hang ups I thought

Lucca might need a walk around the block and I could
probably use the fresh air too. I took a pic of these super tall and skinny palm trees that line a street nearby against the brief blue sky. The aftermath of the storms left Lucca feeling like he was a kid in a candy shop- all the palm tree parts that blew to the ground were like heaven to him. There he is sniffing out his favorite. I tried to take a pic of him carrying his prize but maneuvering the camera and trying to walk a dog carrying an 8 foot palm proved to be too difficult. Or so I thought- till I got home and looked at the pics and saw the inadvertent shot of his shadow -- sometimes creations are far better when you don't try so hard. Back to designing...

Sometimes when Im designing I feel like Im in this rut and nothing is really coming together or clicking like it should. Sometimes it pans out and sometimes it doesn't and in my current design process, I think I've turned a corner which is a BIG relief. Im excited about the new pieces and in particular these little drops that Im using on everything from rings to necklaces. By handwrapping these filigree pieces around colorful CZ drops, it's adding something that feels special and different. I can't wait to get this stuff out there! Keep your eyes peeled....

Today, Lucca and I went to Fiesta Island...and while it's not exactly an island of parties- to a dog, it comes close. I've watched the ground go from brown dusty dirt last summer to this awesome mix of greens and Lucca's loving running right through it. I love how it's a mix of all sorts of green- almost yellows to the dark deeper green... maybe my crazy artist mind taking over, but it doesn't help that Im also in the middle of designing a new collection. I love monochromatic anything and while Im not sure it's going to fit into the work this time around, I know it will at some point. Im always a fan.

It's been an (unexpectedly) trying process but mimi&lu is just about ready -- Thinking about the 'brand' and where I wanted mimi&lu to go was surprisingly difficult. I learned to let go of some of my preconceived ideas of what I wanted and ended up loving things I never thought I would. For example, my color palette.. pinks and peaches and violets and browns- who knew! I always imagined myself as a blues and greens girl. But when it came down to it, (thanks to some amazing help from a designer who worked on the color branding) I was able to take myself out of that box and come away with something soft and beautiful.

I thought I'd share some of my pics I used in my virtual scrapbook that helped guide the process. Right now my problem is focusing on creating a new collection since I have so many exciting ideas on where I want to go with mimi&lu!

LUCCA LOVE

Sometimes running my own business can be lonely. While I pride myself on still being able to produce every piece myself, it also means I am all by myself. Insert Lucca.

If you know about Lucca, you know he is trouble. Cute trouble, but trouble. Lucca is our great dane puppy who joined my husband and me in January and I immediately fell in love. I had imagined him to be someone I could talk to while I bend and twist wires all day. Someone who would force me to take breaks away from my jewelry table for long peaceful walks. But Lucca, he's special. In the first 3 months of owning him, Lucca has managed to get a life threatening illness, a hard to find parasite, become anemic and to top it off- break his leg. He is currently in a cast up to his shoulder and on 'puppybed rest' for 6 weeks.

Basically, Ive got one hand in jewelry and the other holding down a 6 month old (75lb!) puppy. So much for being lonely, we are practically attached at the hip.

Welcome to Moushart's blog. Finally, I am getting up to speed in the cyber world and allowing handmade to meet high tech. I plan to use this platform to keep fans up to date on new designs, current promotions, upcoming events and Moushart news in general.

The site has just been updated and you will find fresh designs mixed in with your favorites. The biggest addition is the Personalize It section, which is a new collection of handstamped items. Customize it to whatever fits you and each letter is stamped on by hand. My favorite are the Speak Rings.
